The wrestling team hosted their 89th Wilkes Open Wrestling Championship tournament in the Marts Center at Wilkes University on Dec. 22, 2022.
The tournament consisted of over 225 competitors from the division one, two, and three levels — including wrestlers from Rutgers, Lehigh, and Army.
The competition gave wrestlers from all over the East Coast a chance to earn their ranks in their respective weight classes.
Wilkes’ head coach Jonathan Laudenslager, who is in his 20th season as head coach of the program, looked forward to hosting the matchups in 10 different weight classes.
“It is a great opportunity for our guys to see some really good kids (wrestlers) mid-season,” said Laudenslager. “It is something we look forward to every year.”
Two Colonels placed in the top three in their weight classes: Hunter Lowe placed second in 197 and Austin Fashouer placed third in 125.
The Wrestling Championship tournament was a great success for the athletics department at Wilkes University.
This was also a success in the sports media communication world as I was able to cover the event through WilkesNow TV Youtube by creating a news segment on the event, which can be watched at this link:
The event will continue next year as the Colonels will host the 90th event.
