2023 NFL Draft

One of the biggest sports media communication events in the United States is being held on April 27th through April 29th… The 2023 NFL Draft.

In 2022, ESPN, ABC and NFL Network averaged 10.031 million viewers — 4.446 million on ESPN, 3.803 million on ABC and 1.782 million on NFL Network (LA Times).

This event is major for the NFL as well as advertisers as the viewership is so high. The “surge of popularity (of the NFL draft) has made its way to the ad buy rates for ABC and ESPN, who are reportedly getting a cool $250,000 per 30 second commercial” (DraftKings). Although the price is high to run ads, you have to think about the outcome. If 10.031 million viewers see those advertisements, the company's advertising could make large profits.

From a sports perspective, the event is so popular due to the fact that college favorites will be brought up to the pro league. College football fans get the opportunity to watch in utter excitement as players get called up. The college athletes and their families wait in anticipation of receiving that life-changing phone call. The overall process of sports communication through this event is cool to watch as there are senders and receivers; the coaches and players making picks and getting that call and the audience or fans taking in the new NFL signees. So many verbal and nonverbal cues can be seen throughout the event; the excitement, the nerves, the celebration.
